On November 9, the Expert Review Committee (ERC) for the global index convened in Amsterdam to discuss the methodology for the 2018 Access to Seeds Index. The experts commended the overall focus of the methodology following the thorough review process over the past months.
The ERC is composed of representatives from different stakeholder backgrounds that convenes every year to provide advice on the index and its methodology. This meeting followed a series of regional ERC meetings in Abidjan, Johannesburg and Hyderabad during which the scope for each of the regional indexes was discussed. The input from these meetings was presented to the ERC for the global index in Amsterdam.
The ERC noted that the 2016 Access to Seeds Index provided useful insights on company and industry practices- it emphasized the importance of the sector in global food security. The index has proven useful for multiple stakeholders, including the industry itself, to help inform their decision-making. Notably, the information on company operations in developing regions was widely used. As a result, more targeted data on company presence and the diversity of seed portfolios in developing regions will be collected.
Advice from the ERC will be used to finalize the methodology for the 2018 Access to Seeds Index which will subsequently be brought forward for approval by the Supervisory Board in December 2017.
