Dr. Victor Afari-Sefa, Agricultural Economist of the World Vegetable Center (AVRDC) presented an overview of research on vegetable seed systems for smallholder farmers during the AFSTA Congress in Nairobi Kenya. Dr. Afari-Sefa explained that “vegetable seed can be an important entry point for delivering a range of advances related to smallholder livelihoods”, such as promoting productivity, increased income, nutrition and resilience.

He also stated that “the recently released 2016 Access to Seeds Index Report shows that there is a prudent need for private seed companies to meet needs of diverse smallholder market segments with a focus on smallholder centric business models”
